World Refugee Day is this Monday, June 20th. In celebration, we invite you to take a look inside our English classes at Caritas of Austin. For the past few years, we have been contracted to teach work preparation English to hundreds of Caritas’ clients. In this video you’ll meet Lilian, a refugee from Cuba, and Casey, E@W’s Student Intake and Outtake Specialist and Substitute Teacher.
And although these students are not featured, we would like to keep in mind our other refugee students in classes at E@W host businesses all over town. Our refugee student population has grown steadily as Austin becomes one of the biggest hubs in the nation for refugees.
And if you’re looking to find plans for this Saturday, please help us welcoming our newest Texans at the World Refugee Day celebration at the Bob Bullock Museum from 12 noon – 3pm. The event is free and there will be live music and various family-friendly games and activities.
We must always keep in mind that one refugee without hope is too many. See what you can do to help by visiting the UN Refugee Agency. To get involved locally, visit Caritas of Austin or the Multicultural Refugee Coalition.
